}Test data only. This record describes no real person. Numbers are drawn from ranges reserved so they can never be assigned, and the address is not deliverable. Using synthetic data to impersonate anyone, open or verify an account, or evade identity checks is prohibited — see the terms.
The first is that postal codes are numeric. They are not: the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Malta and others all use letters, and Canada excludes six letters entirely because sorting machines confuse them with digits. Storing a postal code as an integer is the single most common address bug there is — it silently destroys the leading zero on 02134, 01310-100 and every German code beginning 0.
The second is that they are a fixed length. UK postcodes range from five to seven characters across six different shapes. A regex written against SW1A 1AA rejects M1 1AE, which is equally valid.
The third is that every country has one. The United Arab Emirates does not, and Ireland only introduced Eircode in 2015. A mandatory postcode field makes those countries impossible to complete honestly.
The table below shows each country's postal code shape. A hash marks a digit, a question mark marks a letter, and any spaces or hyphens shown are part of the canonical written form. Where a country writes its code with a separator — Poland's 00-001, Sweden's 111 22, Japan's 100-0001 — that separator is conventional and users will type it.
N marks a digit and A a letter. Any spaces or hyphens shown are part of the canonical written form and users will type them.

For the twenty countries with a written guide, the leading digits come from the real prefix for the city shown, so the code lands in the right region. The trailing digits are random, so the complete code is not verified against a postal database and is not a real delivery point. Treat it as format-valid and regionally plausible rather than real.
Because leading zeros are meaningful and common. 02134 is Boston, 01310-100 is São Paulo, 01067 is Dresden. Stored as an integer, each of those loses its first character and becomes a different, wrong value — and the failure is silent.
Per country, and loosely. Apply the format rule for the selected country rather than one global pattern, allow the field to be optional for countries without a system, and normalise whitespace and case rather than rejecting on them.
Only terminology. ZIP is the United States term — it stands for Zone Improvement Plan — while most other English-speaking countries say postcode or postal code. They serve the same routing purpose with entirely different formats.
